A friend of mine recently asked me the question ‘ What’s the best set of golf irons under $400?’
I have been using my old trusty and now rusty set of Taylormade RBZ irons for the past few years, I now have the money to upgrade my irons and my limit is $400. My old irons were a fantastic set of clubs, easy to hit and felt great.
The other reason is a friend of mine has just started playing golf with a set of secondhand PINGS purchased from a charity shop, they are very old and not really helping his game to be honest.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR IN A SET OF IRONS
Build quality is very important as I won’t be changing these clubs for a few years so a set of Dunlop irons are out of the question. I have found that all the top brands are great quality, CALLAWAY, COBRA, WILSON STAFF, TAYLORMADE, and Benross a new British manufacturer are all available for under $400.
PERFORMANCE AND DISTANCE
The first question my friend asked me when I told him my choice was ‘ Will they give me good distance?’ For a beginner or high handicapper, this is always the number one question asked. My reply will always be the same, it’s the player that generates the distance, not the club.
You can hit a bad shot with a set of clubs costing a fortune and it will still be a bad shot. It’s no different with a cheaper set of clubs. If you strike the ball well it will go further and at our level, the difference in distance will be unnoticeable. There are many Youtube videos that show you that a well-struck ball with the chosen irons under $400 will go just as far as a well-struck shot with some new Titleist 718’s.
WILL THEY BE FORGIVING?
The irons we have chosen are game-improving clubs so YES they will be forgiving, but again even the best clubs in the world won’t help you if you hit your shots fat or shank them. Only lessons will improve them.
If you strike the ball just off-center then Yes they will help with this type of shot. I’m sure after using your old clubs for so long you will see the difference immediately after purchasing these clubs.
The soles are wider to give you more forgiveness, and it’s easier to get more distance out of every impact location. You’ll feel confident over the ball, and you have the technology to hit good shots more consistently. To help you hit the ball farther, Callaway has included the progressive lengths and lofts through the set for longer distance shots from each club.
WILL THEY LOOK THE PART?
Our chosen club for under $400 will not look out of place on any first Tee, you will be proud of the clubs you pull out of your bag. Trust me NO ONE will laugh at these unless they don’t know what they’re talking about. You will tell any golfer the brand of these clubs and they will say ‘WOW NICE IRONS.
Looks shouldn’t be the main focus when buying a set of irons but if you don’t like how they look you won’t feel confident using them.
SO, WHAT’S THE BEST SET OF GOLF IRONS UNDER $400?
We couldn’t choose from two sets of golf irons, so we have listed both below.
