So, You want to fix your slice right? I bet like me you’ve spent a fortune down at the range practicing your driving and yet on the course, you still hit out of bounds on the right with most of your Tee shots. Correct?
You have probably been watching loads of Youtube videos and hoping to find that quick fix, well, unfortunately, there isn’t one. Without lessons from a qualified golf pro most beginners take over a year to even start to see an improvement in curing their slice. It took me nearly two years and finally, I can hit it straight. This was only after a few lessons and a new driver.
WHAT’S THE REASON YOU SLICE THE BALL?
There are a number of reasons why you slice the ball we have listed the main reasons below.
- CLUBFACE AT IMPACT: the number one reason is that the clubface at impact is open to the path. This means the ball is spinning clockwise in the air which causes the flight of the ball to go to the right.
- SWING: you will probably be swinging your driver from out to in or the dreaded ( over the top ) move that you will hear so many golf pros talk about. Can you hit a straight shot with an over-the-top move? sure but you would need great clubface control at impact, which is the hardest part of the golf swing.
- GRIP: grip plays a massive part in controlling the clubface at impact. You can experiment with different types of grip from 10 Finger baseball grip, to interlock.
We are not Golf pros and offer this advice as a practical guild so you know what the issue is, how you fix it is entirely up to you, but like we’ve said already GET LESSONS. All the youtube videos and DVD lessons in the world will not help you totally cure your slice, they can help identify the reason for the slice but not cure it. The fewer swing thoughts going through your head at address over the ball the better.
To eliminate the slice you need the proper grip and setup, an inside-to-out downswing path and a square clubface.
Keep it simple, focus on clubface position at impact. STRIKE IS KING in the golf shot.
SO HOW CAN A NEW DRIVER HELP?
Many clubs are now marketed as ANTI-SLICE drivers, and yes they will help you but they will not cure your slice. Trust me I’ve spent a fortune on drivers to find one that cures my slice and the only thing that helped me to eventually fix the slice was a £100 3 hour lesson with a fully qualified coach. Once I understood what the issue was and was given some practice routines to do at home and the driving range did I see some improvement, only then did I go out and get a new driver. One that had a slight draw bias to help close the clubface at impact which really helps me fix that slice.
Once I understood that I needed to start the ball right of target and swing in to out and stop coming over the top, did I see some improvement. Now all I focus on is clubface control at impact, the rest will take care of itself.
SO WHAT DRIVERS ARE BEST TO HELP FIX A SLICE?
Speak to your local pro shop to help you get fitted for a club that will help you. We understand money is tight so you’ll probably ( like me ) get fitted and come away with the details of the driver best for you. You’ll then search the internet for the same club spec but at the lowest price possible.
What Should I Look for in an Anti-slice Driver?
There are a number of things you should look for in a driver that will help you fix your slice. The main features are adjustability for the clubface position, Titleist have fantastic adjustability on their drivers and have a chart ( see below) to help you set the clubface bias. You can set them to draw the ball, that’s a shot that starts right of target and has a ball flight that goes to the right and land on target. Or you can set them to fade the ball, that’s a shot that starts left of the target and comes round to the right and lands on target.
If you have a slice and can reduce it to a fade this is a good shot to have in your locker, A fade for many years has been classed as an inferior shot by some uneducated players. Try telling Rickie Fowler he plays a rubbish fade!
Also, look for adjustability in the clubhead and neck normally these are weights that slide back and forward which will help you hit a better ball flight. If you struggle to get height from your Tee shot you can adjust the weights to give you a higher ball flight which will give you more distance, but remember if you’re still hitting that slice that will only go further out of bounds on the right. Argggh!
Our advice is to try a slower swing speed and focus on accuracy rather than distance, we all want to do a John Daly and LET IT RIP! But I’d rather hit a 150 yard drive right down the center of the fairway than a 300-yard drive out of bounds on the right. You will be able to build up your club speed once you’re hitting the fairway more often.
Most good players will be able to draw or fade a ball off the Tee, but us mortals would just be glad to not slice it out of bounds on the right!
OK So let’s talk new about which drivers will help you
