Golfers are notorious for forgetting some of the most important accessories needed for a round of golf.

Sure, you can technically play golf without tees, for example, but it is not recommended. Besides, your playing partners will likely have extra tees or maybe even an extra glove if you have forgotten that one too.

But finding enough extra towels among your foursome will be unlikely. Yes, that’s “towels” plural. You need more than the one towel that almost every golfer has hanging from the bag.

And you shouldn’t rely on the towels many clubs will provide for you. They are typically not the quality you need. To that end, here are some towels you could use on the course. Some of these are specialty towels, while all could help you play better.

Greens Towel Microfiber

3 Pack of Pink Microfiber Golf Towels

The function of a towel on the golf course is to clean. A golf towel needs to be large enough to section in for different uses. You might want to keep one corner wet to clean dirt from clubs, while keeping the rest of the towel dry.

Many golf towels are large and unwieldy. Enter the Greens Towel. At 16 inches square, this towel is plenty big enough to cover any need while being small enough to fold and put in your pocket. The three towels in this package is a perfect number for a round.

This towel also has some other great features. They are highly absorbent and the microfiber nap is great for getting into tight places.

It is also fast drying, which helps avoid mildew and odors.

Each of the three towels includes a carabiner to attach to your bag, cart, or even your belt.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Highly absorbent
  • Handy size

Cons

  • Maybe too small for some preferences

Chill Pal PVA Cooling Towel

Chill Pal PVA Cooling Towel (Ocean Blue)

This is a specialty towel not designed specifically for golf. It is also the only towel here that has as its main function something other than cleaning. But it serves its one main function so well it deserves a spot on this list.

As the name suggests, the Chill Pal is designed to keep you cool. That’s huge for the many golfers who play in hot weather. Of course, you will need to pair this with at least one, and perhaps two or more, towels that can take care of your cleaning needs.

Pros

  • Compact size
  • Synthetic design is ultra-absorbent
  • Can be used for other needs

Cons

  • You will need other towels aside from this one

Cons

  • Might be too unwieldy for certain tasks

Team Effort Collegiate

Team Effort Auburn Tigers 15' x 15' Microfiber Towel

Chances are you can find logos on towels for almost any sport to prove your worth as a true fan.

Pros

  • Carabiner attachment
  • Excellent size
  • Waffle microfiber design works well

Cons

  • A somewhat high price for one small towel

This towel’s unique design earned it a top award at the PGA Merchandise Show.

  • Able to keep inner layer wet while outer stays dry

Cons

Perfshot Golf Towel

Perfshot Microfiber Waffle-Weave Golf Towel with Golf Club Brush | 16' 24' Towel | Multi-use Groove Cleaner (Black Towel + Orange Brush)

One of the more interesting aspects of this towel is its stitched loop for attaching it to your bag. You will almost always see this achieved with a metal rivet. Using a stitched loop makes cleaning easier.

That’s not all there is to like here. The towel has a microfiber construction with a waffle design. The manufacturer claims that will give you three times the absorbency and five times the durability over cotton towels.

It also comes with a brush that you almost always see sold separately. These brushes are terrific for digging the dirt that sometimes gets impacted in the grooves of your clubs.

It may seem like a small thing, but that dirt can definitely have a negative impact on your iron shots.

Pros

  • Waffle microfiber design
  • Stitched loop
  • Brush included

Cons

  • Larger than almost any other golf towel

So why do you even need a golf towel, much less more than one? While it is true that you can play the game without a towel, it could be a messy experience and sometimes even hurt your score.

You need to keep certain objects clean, notably your club faces and grips, balls, and hands.

If you play in muddy conditions, it is quite easy to accumulate dirt and mud in the grooves of your irons. And a shot from the rough can also leave some grass clippings behind on the club face. Either of these conditions can leave you with a club that does not perform to its specifications.

Having dirt or grass on the club face can reduce the amount of spin you impart on the ball. If you are hitting into a hard green that does not hold shots well, a lack of spin can be particularly damaging.

The same is true for the golf ball. Even a tiny bit of mud on one side of the ball can have an outsized influence on the path the ball takes, either on the green or in the air. Of course, unless you are playing lift, clean, and place, you cannot clean the mud from your ball in the fairway. But you certainly can and should before every putt.

Other uses for towels on the course involve you or items you wear, such as glasses. Keeping your glasses clean without streaks is a great plus for those who need eyewear on course.

Cleaning your hands after applying sunscreen is a must, as well. Also, sweat can be anything from an annoyance on your face to a hazard to your swing on your hands.

Having a useful set of towels with you while you play is hardly a luxury. Overlooking those needs can leave you with a less enjoyable experience and even hurt your score.
