What’s the difference between a GOLF GPS and GOLF RANGEFINDER?

  • GOLF GPS: These systems which can be in the form of a watch or a small unit that clips onto your bag. You can even download GOLF GPS app on your phone these days. A golf GPS will give you a wealth of information from yardages to hazards, out of bounds etc. It will show you bunkers you can’t see plus information about the size and shape of the greens, also the dreaded OUT OF BOUNDS!  They come pre-loaded with 1000’s of courses and are easy to set up and ready to start enjoying straight out of the box. Accuracy is their only downfall, these units are a massive improvement on GOLF GPS units of old. Technology has improved with the advancement in GPS Satellites but their still not 100% accurate. ( Has your car GPS ever taken you down the wrong road? ) The benefit of using them over a rangefinder is that they will give you information about hazards and distances you can’t see with the naked eye.

  • RANGEFINDERS: Some of the best rangefinders are made by BUSHNELL, CALLAWAY and EASY GREEN. The best thing about a rangefinder is ACCURACY! Nothing comes close to the accuracy they provide and they can measure distances from 5 Yards – 1000 Yards. ( Hopefully, you won’t need 1000 Yards). You don’t need to worry about having the course planned or downloaded to the device. Just point and go. The only thing you need to worry about is batteries. Which by the way last for ages, as most have an automatic shut off so you can’t accidentally leave it switched on.  In my Bushnell, I haven’t changed the batteries for over a year. The only Con or downside with Rangefinders is you need a steady hand to pinpoint the flag if you’re using a cheaper or older model. Some of the newer rangefinders now have JOLT technology built in to help stabilise the target point making it easier to lock onto the flag for an accurate reading. The yardage is given instantly when you point the rangefinder at the target within the screen. Some clubs and tournaments won’t allow rangefinders for a couple of reasons. 1) They can slow pace as you get the rangefinder out of your bag every shot. 2) They offer an unfair advantage using one compared to a player relying on their eyes alone.

  • GOLF GPS WATCH: These have probably advanced more than any other Golf GPS device in the last 2-3 years. Gone is the old-fashioned and bulky watch on your wrist that felt like carrying a brick around. Now they’re light, stylish and very accurate. One of the disadvantages in the past was setting them up after taking them out of the box from new. You needed to charge the device, then connect it to a computer and download the course you want and then set up the tee boxes. NO MORE! Just open the box, switch on and go play better golf. They even come pre-charged now with 40,ooo course on some watches pre-loaded. The accuracy has also improved, you can stand on the tee and it will say 180 Yards and you take three steps forward and it drops to 179 Yards. This gives you confidence its dialled in and ready to trust on your next shot.

Use them for practice

One of the best parts of a GOLF GPS is for practising which is a part of the game we all should all do more. I use my rangefinder on the practice area to map down my clubbing distances and chipping range. Working out your gapping and distances is one of the most important parts of bringing down your golf score. Knowing how far each club hits the ball will help you target in on those tight greens.

Using a GOLF GSP as you walk around your course will help you understand your game better and help you plot the course better. This will help you gain better course management.
